WAEC Releases 2012/2013 WASSCE Results

The May/June 2012 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) result released by the examination body, West African Examination Council (WAEC), on Friday August 10, has shown as increase of about 8percent from last year’s performance. Iyi Uwadiae, the head of the Nigeria National Office of WAEC, made this known during the formal announcement of the release of the results at the council’s head quarters in Lagos.

Uwadiae disclosed that out of the 1,672,224 candidates that sat for the examination, 649,156 representing 38.81percent obtained credits in five subjects and above including English Language and Mathematics, which is an increase of about 8percent to the 30.91percent recorded in 2011.

According to the WAEC boss, there has been a consistent improvement in the performance of students in the examination since 2010 which he says “is an indication that investment in the education sector, particularly, under the transformation agenda of the present administration is beginning to yield dividends.”

He said out of the total number that sat for the examination, 1,545,004 candidates representing 91.10percent have their results fully released while 150,874 candidates, representing 8.90percent have a few of their subjects still being processed due to some errors mainly traceable to the candidates and the schools in the course of registration and writing of the examination.

While disclosing that the Council was already working to correct the errors in order to fully release the results of the affected candidates, Uwadiae announced that the results of a total of 122,000 candidates, representing 6.70percent were being withheld in connection with cases of examination malpractices which are being investigated. This, he noted was a decline from last year’s record, noting that an improvement in performance translates to a decrease in malpractices.

He however announced that candidates will be able to check the details of their performance on the Council’s results website: www.waecdirect.org within the next 48 hours.

Earlier, the WAEC boss had lamented the rate of examination malpractice in the country, dearth of qualified teachers for Mathematics and Science related subjects as well as inadequate facilities in both public and private schools and called for improved funding for the educational sector.

Uwadiae who is rounding off his tenure as the Head of Nigeria National Office of WAEC, will be resuming office as the registrar of the Council in Accra, Ghana by October 1, 2012. He will be succeeded by Mivoghenubo Eguridu as the Head of Nigeria National Office.

UniLag rejects renaming, introduces 'UniLag Forever' badge

The management of University of Lagos (UniLag) now Moshood Abiola University has introduced a new badge with the words 'UniLag Forever' inscribed on it.
This was done in a bid to disregard the renaming of the institution on May 29, 2012 by President Goodluck Jonathan.
The badge was shared to students and members of staff at a news conference held by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday.
The chairman of the UniLag branch of ASUU, Dr Oghenekaro Ogbinaka said that introduction of the badge was one of the steps being taken by the union to kick against the renaming of the university. He revealed that more plans were on the way to further drive home their point.
It will be recalled that the president submitted a bill to the House of Representatives after the May 29 announcement seeking the renaming of the University of Lagos alongside two other universities which passed first and second reading.
The change of name from University of Lagos to Moshood Abiola University sparked series of protests from students and alumni of the institution who kicked against the renaming.
Majority of students who shared their thoughts on the renaming, refused to accept the change saying that they were admitted into University of Lagos and not Moshood Abiola University.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND THE CHALLENGE OF NIGERIA’S VARSITY SYSTEM

The challenges in Nigeria's university system can never be swept under the carpet as they keep re-occurring, even when efforts have been made to tackle some of its numerous problems. In this report, Kuni Tyessi takes a look at the journey so far.

The minister of education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa'i has noted severally that for Nigeria to achieve its vision of becoming one of the leading twenty economies in the world by the year 2020, the nation must be able to harness the potentials inherent and also not toy with its education.

It would be pertinent to note that Universities are established for the generation of new knowledge, which is based on research, to support economic growth and competitiveness and sub-Saharan Africa cannot afford to continue to be spoon-fed by other nations who have made giant strides through deliberate investment in the education of the citizenry.

An Interesting example of the minister's battle to restore sanity and probity in the nation's tertiary institutions was the handling of a potentially very messy affair involving the Federal University of Petroleum Resources University Effurun, Delta State. This is an institution that has simply refused to grow since its establishment in 2006 as a specialized university for oil and gas.

The situation was compounded by the frosty relations between the management of the university and the last governing council on the one part and the overbearing, selfish interference by a former Minister of Education from the area who made his unqualified and inexperienced wife deputy registrar of the university and was bent on hoisting her as the substantive registrar of the university.

In furtherance of this goal, this former minister was illegally attending meetings of the council in his capacity as a Minister of State in the sector. Development projects where not executed even when financial provisions had been made for them.

The visitation panel was directed to recall any staff on leave. This may be in direct reference to the former Minister's wife who quickly took a leave on anticipation of the Special Visitation Panel inquest into the activities of the University. The committee submitted its report on Monday, 5th October, 2012 and made far reaching recommendations. We anxiously await further development s on the outcome of the report.

A very fundamental development in the education sector was the inauguration of the Needs Assessments Committee for public Universities in Nigeria. This Committee is a direct fallout of the historic roles played by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Sen. Anyim Pius Anyim who led the Federal Government team in resolving the outstanding issues in the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement which led to the suspension of the two-month old nationwide strike by ASUU.

Among other issues, the Federal Government gave commitments to the unions to increase funding for Nigerian universities from statutory and non-statutory sources. However, government wants to know what use the money is going to be put to, hence the necessity for a needs assessment for all public universities in Nigeria.

It is sad that in many Universities, there is neither accurate nominal roll of staff and students nor a reliable inventory of learning resources or even an accurate condition survey of physical infrastructure. The nation's high level manpower is trained on obsolete equipment and in most cases, in disciplines not directly central to our national development and international competitiveness.

The minister inaugurated the Committee which includes members from the National Assembly, the executive arm of government and the unions. This is the first time in a long time that a government committee is having such representations considering the principle of separation of powers.

This committee is chaired by the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Prof. Mahmood, perhaps as a result of his role in the last four years in providing renewed invigoration, focus and best practices in the funding of tertiary institutions in Nigeria via the activities of that agency which has received both national and international acclaim.

The Committee is required to make actionable recommendations that will allow for the optimum application of the additional resources government has promised for education in a nation used to spending without plan.

This appears a novelty. The minister is determined that resources must be deployed to address priorities of Universities. This move will definitely not make her popular with the beneficiaries of the old order.

MINISTER UNHAPPY WITH NOUN ENROLMENT

The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) is expected to have no fewer than 500,000 students, a far cry from the 132,000 which have so far enrolled.

This was revealed yesterday by the minister of education,Prof Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa'I, when she inaugurated a ministerial committee on the collaboration between NOUN and the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).

The minister said NOUN, which was resuscitated in 2002 and has ever since pursued its mandate, can still do better as the current enrolment of students is still low despite Nigeria's exceptionally large demand for education.

She said the collaboration between NOUN and NTA will provide access and equity as 'NTA can provide support in the production of course materials for NOUN and assist nationwide transmission to educational programmes'.

The terms of reference for the committee include, among others, more proposals on ways to collaborate between NOUN and NTA as well as other relevant stakeholders, and mechanisms on how to collaborate with existing educational regulatory bodies.

Similarly, the minister also inaugurated a special task force on achieving the objectives of the World Bank-assisted projects, which will  provide intervention in the development of science and technology.
